This November, Dubai Design Week marked its 10th anniversary. Our team at Maklad Design was excited to take part in this key design festival in the Middle East. The event ran from November 5-10, 2024, at the Dubai Design District (d3), showcasing remarkable innovation and creativity.

This year was special, celebrating ten years of Dubai Design Week’s impact on the $26 billion design industry. More than 500 renowned designers and emerging talents came together, filling the space with energy and inspiration.

Sustainable Innovation Takes Center Stage
One major highlight was the strong focus on sustainable design. We were amazed by the creative use of materials in the exhibitions. Ideas like banana fiber, soybean wax, Himalayan salt, and recycled truck tarpaulins show that sustainability can be both practical and inspiring.
The Warp Pavilion, designed by Mitsubishi Jisho Design Inc., beautifully merged tradition with innovation. Its mix of ancient Japanese carpentry and modern 3D-printing technology illustrated how we can respect craft while embracing sustainable solutions.
Downtown Design: A Hub of Creative Excellence
The Downtown Design fair at the Waterfront Terrace was a key part of our visit. We were eager to check out smart home solutions, including Renson’s climate-responsive Skye roofing and Occhio’s VOLT lighting range. Kettal’s 100% recyclable paint for outdoor furniture also stood out as a noteworthy sustainable innovation.

Editions: A New Chapter in Design
The inaugural Editions fair added a fresh layer to Dubai Design Week. With over 50 galleries and design studios showcasing limited edition pieces, it offered a unique look at the blend of art and design. This addition highlighted Dubai’s growing reputation as a global design hub.
Looking to the Future
As interior design professionals, we were inspired by the Urban Commissions competition’s “Tawila” concept. The idea of rethinking the table as a tool for social connection resonated with our vision of creating spaces that encourage community.
The role of technology in design was another fascinating aspect this year. The future of design is bright. AI fabrics that adjust to body temperature and advanced 3D-printed structures show how technology can boost functionality.
Final Thoughts
Dubai Design Week 2024 reinforced our belief in design’s ability to shape a sustainable future. The event showcased exciting trends and innovations while also showing how the design community can unite to tackle global challenges.
As we return to our studio, we carry fresh inspiration and ideas for our upcoming projects. This experience has strengthened our commitment to creating designs that are beautiful and environmentally responsible.
Looking ahead, we’re excited to weave these new perspectives and technologies into our work, continuing to push the boundaries of interior design while staying true to our commitment to sustainability and excellence.
